History
1890-1900
With high schools throughout Indiana starting basketball teams in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) sanctioned a state tournament in March of 1911.
7
For the first eight state tournaments, teams from Boone County and neighboring Montgomery County won seven of those eight championships.
1911-1917
From Montgomery County Crawfordsville won the first in 1911, with Wingate (North Montgomery) winning in 1913 and 1914. From Boone County Lebanon won in 1912, 1917, and 1918. Thorntown (Western Boone) won in 1915.
1894
Crawfordsville has been given the credit of hosting the first official basketball game in Indiana in 1894.
1911-1918
Along with all the tournament success of the Boone-Montgomery County high schools from 1911-1918, this area was dubbed the “Cradle of Basketball” for the state of Indiana.
Now
The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame has already enshrined several Boone County players and coaches. Those people are automatic inductees for the Boone County Hall of Fame.
